This week St Marys Cement launched its legal efforts to have the recently issued Ministerial Zoning Order (MZO) revoked. In doing so it also requested that the application to revoke the MZO be referred to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) for decision.
While this was not a surprise, it is a disappointment. Despite the objections of every agency and every government that is involved with the proposed development, St Marys Cement insists on continuing the fight to establish what could become the country's third largest quarry in the midst of our communities. It continues to pursue a project that could put our access to clean drinking water at risk. It continues to pursue a project that could irreparably harm the sensitive environmental features of the area. It continues to pursue a project that could put industrial traffic on local roads incapable of safely handling it. Even after the Province has clearly spoken, St Marys Cement continues to fight on.
Let's not let St Marys Cement's announcement this week impact our chance to celebrate a major milestone in our fight to protect our homes, businesses, and families. The Provincial announcement of a Ministerial Zoning Order on Tuesday April 13th was a major step towards ending this assault on our communities. It was a game changer.
Please join your neighbours this weekend as planned for a celebration of this major milestone in our opposition. Let us show them that we are still just as engaged as ever. Let us put St Marys Cement's aggressive and un-neighbourly behaviour to the side for a time. Despite their announcement this week, let us take this opportunity to both celebrate the freezing of the zoning on the proposed Flamborough Quarry property and to thank all of those who made this possible. We hope to see you there.
