FORCE Gala 2006 - An Evening to Remember
Our local community showed its true commitment and resolve to defeat the St Marys Cement Group (CBM) quarry application at our recent Gala, "Friends" a Vital Force in our Community' held November 11th 2006 at the Carlisle Golf and Country Club. This evening was one of fine dining, amazing entertainment, and a true spirit of community. Almost 200 friends and neighbours participated in our largest fundraising event of the year. We were able to enjoy some of Canada's leading entertainers such as Leslie Andrew and Canada's Three Tenors. The Carlisle Golf and Country Club was a most gracious and giving host. And our guests enjoyed top notch food, and literally exhausted themselves applauding the artists who entertained them.
A true highlight of the evening was the moving tribute to fallen Canadian war heroes delivered by our own Mike Gillhoolley, a veteran himself. While we feel we are in the fight of our lives, we were made to remember those whose lives were lost to give us the freedom we all enjoy today.
We are excited and very pleased to have raised over $20,000 through the generous purchase of tickets as well as the bids placed on items in the silent auction. All funds will be put directly towards our case as we move forward with this ongoing and very expensive fight. We are up against an opponent with very deep pockets and who has the backing of its Brazilian parent company.
We are extremely thankful to all those individuals and businesses who donated the many items for our auction. We are also fortunate to have had our event attended by our MPP, Ted McMeekin and our Ward Councillor Margaret McCarthy. Our local politicians have been extremely supportive of this cause and their attendance demonstrates their commitment to stopping the CBM application.
Finally we wish to Thank all those who joined us for the evening. They demonstrated their personal commitment to this challenge. St Marys Cement take note; this Community is ready to make their case in opposition, we will demonstrate that this is not an appropriate location for your proposed industrial open pit mine and all the intrusive aspects associated with it. You are not welcome in our Community.
